Book excerpt: In "The Void Of Nothingness," the third in a trilogy about journeys, the author asks himself: What am I doing here -- and who is asking in the first place? Looking back on all these inner journeys reveals that he has not arrived anywhere. But that is no surprise. Woe to the one that arrives at his destination. Our universal search for meaning usually shepherds us to religion, but often vaults us on to unforeseen philosophies. The author was born of a Catholic mother and a Jewish father, confirmed a Lutheran, attended Presbyterian Sunday school, and indoctrinated at a fundamentalist Christian summer camp. He held the highest lay position in his church for years, and conducted the service when the pastor was absent. He married both a Catholic and a Jew - not at the same time! He wasn't too concerned about the afterlife either; like all young people, he was immortal. Today, near the end of his life, he is an atheist with an agnostic insurance policy.
