Book excerpt: The basic idea in the design of the system described was to raise the temperature of the surfaces to be protected from ice formations by subjecting the inner faces to a stream of heated air The sources of heated air were three exhaust-gas-to-air heat exchangers; one located in each outboard nacelle. A double-skin type of construction was employed over the forward portion of the wings and tail surfaces. The heated air was caused to circulate by the dynamic pressure of the air stream.
