Book excerpt: Contains the journal of the Board of Managers of the Hudson River State Hospital for the Insane, Poughkeepsie, N.Y., recording the motions and resolutions made, with brief synopses of discussions held, at board meetings between 1867 and 1887. At the first meeting, Joseph W. Cleveland is appointed Hospital Superintendent, and a motion is made to form a committee to procure plans for a hospital building. Subsequent meetings deal with the construction and maintenance of buildings, plans for expansion, price of board for patients, and the need to attract a wealthier clientele, who could bring more money to the institution. At a meeing held on December 16, 1880, a report is given by the Consulting Medical Board of the Hudson River Hospital for the Insane and fully recorded. The report deals with issues such as attitudes towards patients, physical restraint, exercise, the differing treatment of male and female patients, and the need to restructure the administration. At the same meeting, the board responds to the critique and agrees to adopt its suggestions.
