Book excerpt: The paper explores previously overlooked relationships between identity features (struggles and their antecedents and consequences) to understand identity across different professions and practices as a process of reaction and counter-reaction to identity threats and struggles.By adopting an integrated view of professional identity, the paper employs a systematic literature review on professional identity, paying particular attention to the micro-politics and identity dynamics to explore and put in relationship identity features. In doing so, the paper systematizes previous literature and offers a conceptual model for understanding professional identity formation as an iterative interaction of identity struggles, threats and coping behaviours. The paper provides theoretical and practical insights into precarious identities and the continuous refinements and work by professionals to deal with uncertainties, deepening the complex dynamics and interactions involving threats, struggles and coping behaviours affecting professional identity at macro, meso and micro levels and across professions.
