Book excerpt: Engaging the Hearts and Minds of Children for the Kingdom of God The Big Takeaway for your Child: This book is packed with life lessons related to faith, trust, obedience, the value of salvation, humbleness, love for others, coveting and God's love for us. Book 1: My World Turned Upside Down This story was written around a biblical event, recorded in 2 Chronicles 20:1-28. King Jehoshaphat was rare, a righteous king from Judah who along with his people, served God with all his heart. No one dared go to war with him and mess with God, at least until now. Three countries have combined forces, greatly outnumbering the army of Judah. They are set to attack Jehoshaphat's country at any moment. Sadie and her family are caught in the midst of imminent calamity. What will happen to her, to her family and to Judah? Will their faith be enough or will the nation of Judah be no more? Book 2: A Very Expensive Pot of Stew This Bible Story gets its origin in Chapter 25 of the book of Genesis with the birth of Jacob and Esau. Although the boys were twins, they would look and live entirely different lives. Esau, was a big, rugged skillful hunter while Jacob was a slender man, much smarter and craftier than Esau. We will see how Esau didn't value those things he was to receive as the first born son. We will also see how Jacob did and would stop at nothing to get them, even if meant running for his life and living apart from his family. This story is also about the yearning to come home, seeking forgiveness and risking your life to attain it. Book 3: The Pharisee and the Tax Collector Inspired by a New Testament parable spoken by Jesus about a Pharisee and a Tax Collector. This story focuses around a family whose father has to deal with a greedy Tax Collector and pay him ever increasing amounts of money. The family also observes a Pharisee praying out loud at the Temple every week, speaking of his own goodness for all to hear. When the Tax Collector humbles himself and admits his sin, Jesus speaks of him as becoming right with God. Jesus speaks just the opposite of the Pharisee who all have believed was as righteous as they come. The father who knows both the Pharisee and the Tax Collector is now angry and confused. Is there a lesson for him to learn about pride and forgiveness through the eyes of God? Book 4: Gehazi and the Big Lie This Bible Story is about Gehazi, the servant to the prophet Elisha. After Elisha turns down expensive gifts of appreciation, Gehazi determines he must have them no matter what. He then finds himself tangled in a series of lies to get them and cover his sin. What consequences will he face for his actions? What lessons can we learn from him that will keep us from falling into the same trap? Book 5: The Book of Jonah When most people talk about Jonah, they will just mention him being swallowed by a whale. The Book of Jonah, which is only four chapters long does mention him being swallowed by a great fish; whether it was a whale or not is not clear or all that important. What is important is that there is much more to this small but fascinating book. This story was written to bring all four chapters of this book to life and teaches the reader about obedience and God's love for everyone.
