Book excerpt: This book presents the result of research based on the field experience of the contributors with the survivors of ethnic cleansing in the Balkans. The book is divided into ten parts, each dealing with different aspects of the trauma experienced by the survivors but with the central theme of the human costs of war violence and ethnic persecution. The articles focus on ways in which refugees themselves have attempted to cope with these costs and the way in which professionals and nonprofessionals have understood their suffering and responded to it. Contributions to this volume make recommendations for a multidisciplinary approach to the treatment and the recovery of refugees subjected to human rights violations. Besides treatment and rehabilitation of the victims of war, the authors emphasize on the importance of dealing with transgenerational trauma through a societal process of examining the truth and creating reconciliation between warring factions.
