Book excerpt: This study compares acoustic and articulatory productions of Parkinsonian speakers to healthy controls, concentrating more specifically on how vowels are articulated in the presence of tremors and rigidity. Four subjects diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease and four healthy controls were recorded stating utterances comprised of six English vowels on a 3-D Electromagnetic Articulograph. Acoustic differences in vowel quality between the healthy and pathological speech were measured and analyzed by extracting the first and second formant frequencies from the acoustic signal. Similarly, differences in vowel articulation were studied by comparing the maximum displacement of the tongue between the two populations. Acoustic and articulatory vowel space areas were also calculated in a scatter plot. Statistical analysis comparing the acoustic and articulatory vowel space area, vowel production and formant frequencies show an overall decreased acoustic tense and lax vowel space area in those with Parkinson's disease with the exception for tense vowels in males. Parkinsonian speakers also had a higher variability of individual vowel productions, both acoustically and articulatorily while maintaining vowel identity and have more variability overall in the vowel productions related to the vertical axis.
