Book excerpt: We used a three-dimensional time-dependent model, together with the technique of four-dimensional data assimilation, to obtain the diurnal variations of wind, temperature, water vapor, and turbulence in a mountainous region from the west coast to east of the Rockies, and from northern Mexico to Wyoming. Tracer particles were then released in the model to study the transport and diffusion of pollutants through a Lagrangian random-particle statistical method.
