Pryce embarks on a descriptive study of language with a view to answering the following questions: Why and how do languages change? He uses the Finnish language to illustrate that: Language innovation leads to language variation. He observes the phenomenon of the influence of foreignisms on Finnish discourses and concludes that it is an instantiation of a general characteristic of language change.
