Book excerpt: Abstract: Available information on vibration of fresh and hardening concrete, performance of bridge deck widenings and vibration of simply supported and continuous bridges is reviewed. The construction process of a concrete slab bridge widened while maintaining traffic was followed. At the end of the curing period longitudinal cracks over the main reinforcement bars were found to have occurred due to inadequate reinforcement of the pier caps. It is found that the frequence of traffic induced vibrations may have very little effect on hardening concrete and that the major cause of problems in hardening concrete on widened bridges while maintaining traffic seems to be the traffic induced angular rotations near the construction joint. A test is recommended to find the effects of the magnitude and frequency of angular rotations in hardening concrete.
