Historically, the role of live stock has been complementary to crop production. Dairying and agriculture are bound together by a set of natural input-output relationships. Dairying is not an adjunct to the crop mix of Indian farms but is an integral part of the total farming system. Among the world countries India's ranks first in milk production, and it stands as a largest producer of milk. Yet India per Captiva milk consumption is around 250 gram per day .In 2014, milk production of 778 million ton ECM (energy corrected milk with 4% fat and 3.3% proteins) was produced by around 121.5 million dairy farms keeping 363 million milking cows and buffaloes.
