Book excerpt: This little photo album is the first of a series of booklets covering trains and trams in Europe and is self published via Createspace. Most publishers aren't interested in work with European subjects so the author has employed the easy to use system provided by Amazon. He was accompanied on all trips, often by one of his brothers and sometimes by like minded work colleagues. Some of the photos were even taken during family holidays! The author made five trips to the German Democratic Republic ; in 1977, 1978, 1979, 1981 and 1983. It was an interesting place to visit and could be very cheap if west marks were exchanged for east marks on the black market. Hotels had to be booked in advance via Berolina Travel and persistence could result in being allowed to stay in hotels in the smaller towns such as the excellent Wilderman at Annaberg -Bucholz, where free enterprise was evident long before unification. These trips included visits to all nine of the remaining narrow gauge lines and this booklet includes photographs from five of those lines, taken in May 1981 and May 1983. All the lines in this booklet are still open today in some form. The photographs in this booklet were taken with a Bronica ETR-C, 6 x 4.5 cm 15 on 120 roll film camera using exclusively Kodak Ektachrome 64 asa colour slide film. Part Two will cover all nine of the lines with pictures taken by the author's faithful Pentax KX 35 mm camera using Kodak colour slide film.
