Book excerpt: School districts are allocating less time to physical activity and more time to their content areas in order to maximize student performance on standardized assessments. According to research, the combination of less time devoted to physical activity in and outside of school contributes to mental health and physical health issues in students. This quantitative, quasi-experimental study analyzes whether high school students' participation in physical education class negatively affects their ACT Aspire test scores. Results indicate no negative impact from physical education participation, thereby leading the author to recommend that school districts should not reduce physical education class time.
