Book excerpt: In the Shadows of the Kremlin and the White House provides the first comparative study of the Soviet / Russian and Western press coverage of Africa. It analyzes Africa's image in the ex-Soviet and Western press by comparing news coverage of Africa in general under the two press systems. For this purpose, three Soviet publications --Pravda, Izvestia, Novoe Vremya and three Western print media -- the Daily Telegraph (Britain), New York Times, and Newsweek were content-analyzed for a 16 year period (1982-1998).
