Book excerpt: In this study of Anglo-Norman intervention in Ireland during the reign of Henry II (1154-89), Flanagan explores the origins of the political link between Ireland and the English crown. She focuses on the reasons why Diarmait Mac Murchada, the exiled king of Leinster, hired Anglo-Norman mercenaries to help him regain his kingdom; why Anglo-Norman settlers from South Wales accepted his offer of employment in Ireland; and why this in turn provoked a reaction from King Henry II, who intervened in person in Ireland in 1171-72. Drawing on evidence from both 12th-century Irish and Anglo-Norman sources, Flanagan bridges the artificial division between the pre-Norman and post-Norman periods in Ireland.
