R. Bloxam, Dr. W. D. Macray, and Mr. H. A. Wilson. The more he himself comes to know, the more fully will he appreciate the merit of their work, and the deeper will be his sense of gratitude. These pages are indeed little more than an attempt to popularise some of the results of their solid and conscientious labours. To the pious memory of the first, Dr. Bloxam, I would fain add a word of special tribute. He was in this field a genuine pioneer, to whom the College can never be too grateful. An Eastern poet sings, "To the lover of the rose, the very dust of its petals is dear." So was it with Dr. Bloxam and the lilies of Magdalen.
