Book excerpt: Ten years after the end of apartheid, the importance of work has never appeared more clearly in a country which still battles with the legacy of years of discrimination and abuse. But there is a way forward. Provided they receive support and encouragement, people can develop resilience and in this way cope with difficult life circumstances. This is particularly true of the children affected by HIV/AIDS and their families who are the main beneficiaries of the Memory Box Programme established in 2000 at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. The methodology which is presented in this book provides a framework in which memory work can be done as safely as possible to the benefit of the people concerned. The memories of the families are kept in a "memory box" which contains the story of the deceased parents as well as various objects pertaining to their history. The authors of this book are staff members or associates of the Sinomlando Centre for Oral History and Memory Work, a research and community development unit of the School of Religion and Theology, University of KwaZulu-Natal.
