Book excerpt: Sam's Tummy Troubles is written with simple, yet encouraging language. It is intended to be a helpful tool for parents to use with children who are needing to have hospital stays for NG tube GI clean outs. This can be a difficult and scary time for families who have to go through this. Therapist Camille Hereth includes techniques that can help children during these difficult times, such as making choices for themselves, and identifying and validating their emotions. The author includes opportunities for kids to learn ways that they can be a part of making decisions for their hospital stay to help them feel more in control of what is going on. There are opportunities in the text for kids to write in their responses to how they would make choices during their hospital stay, such as what side they want their IV in, and if they want it in their arm or hand. Common side effects that come with a child who has GI issues is mentioned, in effort to normalize the effects of GI issues that children can face. The images are intended to be informative, with out being scary to help prepare children for their hospital stays.
