Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Halloween-themed spelling activity book with colouring pages brings fun to learning tricky spellings. The 30 target words include haunted, cauldron, sorcerer, tombstone and werewolf, but also more frequently used words such as wicked, fright, brain and purple. Working through the pages enables the child to understand what mnemonics (memory triggers) are and how to create them to remember other difficult spellings. Last summer I worked with a boy who was scared of zombies. We found a fun way to learn the spelling of 'zombie' and similar words so he could write a story as a way of conquering his fear. This activity book is for him and other children, especially if they love Halloween. It reveals 'stories' that are hidden within tricky spellings. By recalling the funny and often silly stories, the child will remember the spellings. Once they understand how the method (mnemonics) works, they can come up with their own ways of spelling any word they choose. This is how mnemonics work - they trigger our memory when we need it. This book is not a structured spelling programme. It does not replace any part of the child's current literacy instruction at school. It complements it to help equip the children with additional ways to remember tricky spellings. It's suitable for children who: prefer to learn by seeing and doing have tried traditional spelling strategies (e.g. Look, Cover, Write, Check, and breaking words into sounds and syllables) but with limited success continue to confuse similar sounding and similar looking words have dyslexia or other specific learning difficulty.
