Book excerpt: This nonexperimental study examines the relationship between athletic participation by high school students and academic performance. Academic performance is measures in terms of three dependednt variables: grade point average, attendance, and level of courses taken by students. This investigation shows that students who participate in at least one interscholastic sport during the school year perform better academically than students who do not participate in at least one sport during the school year. ... The results suport the sypothesis that high school students who participate in interscholastic athletic programs achieve higher grade point averages, attend school more regularly, and choose to take more challenging courses, indicating higher educational aspirations, than students who do not participate in athletics. The results strengthen the rationale that stronger academic performance is a benefit of participation in high school athletics and for expanding athletic programs to allow participation for a greater number of students.
