Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of the Tennessee State Medical Association, Vol. 5: May, 1912-April, 1913 The poems of Homer portray a develop ment of the healing art that shows a his tory even then. There was at that time an organized profession, or at least'a sys tem that had required ages to'bring about. Many centuries before, Moses had-written, These are the beasts that ye shall eat that are on the earth, with various other rules of great hygienic value and judg ment. J oseph commanded his physicians to embalm his body, showing that Egypt had at that time men who practiced the heal ing art, and that they must have had at least a rude knowledge of general anatomy. Within the last few years Assyriologists have traced assyrio-ba'bylonian medicine four or five thousand years before Christ, and shown that twenty-two hundred years before the Christian era medical laws were codified, probably being the m0st anéient medical practice act. These laws arre thought by some to have served as a model for the medical laws of Moses. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
