Book excerpt: Abstract: The Latino community is historically known for low utilization of mental health services; this has been a growing concern for researchers and clinical practitioners. However, Latinos are unique in how they perceive support from professionals. The purpose of this project is to provide culturally-relevant bereavement support to older Latinas and promote resilience-focused growth. Funded by The California Wellness Foundation, this project seeks evidence-based research and assesses the unique needs of this large aging community. To provide an understanding of these issues, this project provides an overview of how cultural differences influences mental health linkages and provides conceptualized framework for bereavement-specific support for aging Latinos. Furthermore, this project is hosted by Bella Vida Hospice, Los Angeles California, and presents a comprehensive review of the cultural barriers that prevent Latinos from accessing community mental health services. The actual submission and/or funding of this grant was not a requirement for the successful completion of this project.
