Book excerpt: Abstract: Objectification theory offers a sociocultural framework for understanding how certain variables interact to predict disordered eating. Research supports the applicability of objectification theory with samples of mostly traditional college-aged women; however, a more comprehensive model incorporating the core constructs of objectification theory (i.e., sexual objectification; self-objectification; body shame; poor interoceptive awareness; disordered eating) has not yet been applied to women of diverse ages. The present study tested the applicability of objectification theory with women aged 18-22, 23-34, and 3 5-68. Data from the present study indicated that the present model of objectification theory did not hold for any of the women aged 18-68 years. Additionally, results suggested that constructs of objectification theory interacted differently for women across the adult lifespan.
