Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Engineer, Car Builder and Railroad Journal, 1897, Vol. 71 The iron which is intended for use in the shops is stored in racks or bins outside of the two ends of the building. Each of these bins is numbered and a card is assigned to each bin in which the iron received and that given out is entered. From this the amount on hand can be made out at any time, which should, of course, correspond with an inventory whenever it is taken. The cards are in charge of a person whose business it is to look after the stock of iron on hand, and they are stored in a case under lock and key in the engine-room. The truck shop, which has been described, is near the blacksmith shop. When the trucks are completed, they are run out on a track alongside of the smith shop to be oiled. By the repetition of this operation, on many trucks, much oil was spilled in the ground, which thus became saturated with it. It was therefore feared that it might take fire if a piece of hot iron or a light should accidentally be applied to it. To obviate this risk, a series of sheet iron pans have been located alongside of the tracks, into which the oil drips, and from which it is readily removed.
