Book excerpt: Here Macquarrie challenges extreme views of many kinds, criticizing those theologies that over-emphasize the divine side of Jesus to such a degree that they almost ignore his humanity. In addition, he criticizes those "adoptionist" views, ancient and modern, that threaten to take away the very notion that Jesus is the "God-man" (this paradox is the subject of his first chapter). Finally, he criticizes modern New Testament scholarship, arguing that even if we knew vastly more about the historical Jesus, the mystery of his person would remain.
