Book excerpt: Most contemporary cities are subject to growing levels of operational complexity and forecasting uncertainty, a fact that inevitably increases the difficulties to plan and manage urban development under reasonable standards. The issues of complexity and uncertainty in the urban domain have been studied since the 1960s, but most academic contributions have been partial and discontinued through time. Therefore, this book pursues two major objectives: (1) provide a historical review of the efforts made to understand the phenomena of complexity and uncertainty in both Basic Sciences and Urban Sciences, and (2) display a conceptual model that helps to understand the application of systemic principles and foresight techniques in the urban realm. While the historical overview constitutes an indispensable introduction to systems thinking, the conceptual model facilitates collaborative planning with local stakeholders without losing the perspective of an integrated approach to cities. This book will be appreciated by professors, researchers, and professionals in Urban Sciences.
