Book excerpt: Excerpt from Delaware State Medical Journal, Vol. 3: December, 1911 In casting over the field for a suitable subject as a basis of some remarks on this occasion, many have suggested themselves to my mind, and I have been amazed to note the extraordinary advancements that have been wrought in our profession on all lines in one short generation, since I began the study of medicine in 1886. The progress on scientific lines is truly marvelous. On the other hand, concurrently with our scientific growth, the whole medical profession has become a new social factor in the community, and it is the fault of the individual physician himself, if he does not wield today an influence greater than that of an entire medical faculty or organization in the generations that are past. Let me here pause to say that I think we owe this influence largely to the Splendid solidarity of the profession brought about by the American Medical Association, and the journal which it publishes, which, without doubt, is the best medical journal published in the English-speaking world. The profession is more interested in county, state, and national governmental affairs, and all questions of public health, hygiene and morality than ever before.
