The field of Church History is so extensive, that I have found it impossible to do more in the time allotted to me, than explore a portion of it; and the only method that remains, is to publish the substance of a part of my lectures, which may enable me to examine more minutely some objects that have been hastily past over, and to enter upon new regions. I purpose, should my life be spared, to carry on the History till the end of the sixteenth century, which will probably extend to six or seven volumes.
