Book excerpt: This report describes a pilot project to determine the best approaches for engaging communities in ecosystem monitoring activities that contribute to local sustainability. It first reviews the traditional use of environmental information in communities and the concept of community based monitoring (CBM). It then describes the initiation of the Canadian Community Monitoring Network, lists the communities participating in the pilot project, and presents results & case studies from the project related to community mapping, participation, capacity building, and information gathering & delivery. Lessons learned & critical success factors are outlined along with key outcomes from the pilot project. The final section discusses the future of the Network.
