Book excerpt: “Just Be a Kid” is for the workaholic. The story begins with a child telling his mom to “just be a kid” and that she is “becoming quite cranky” and “that’s no way to be”. The child proceeds to make suggestions about how to become less crabby by being more like a kid. He suggests they run up a hill and then roll down, row a boat or go to a movie because “kids get in for a buck”. They could “watch some construction” and “see the dump trucks”. The child suggests they do something the parent used to do “before being grown up”, like “ride roller coasters and try not to throw up”. Jumping in puddles, chewing bubble gum, lighting a candle or going to a museum or the zoo may help clear mom’s head. In the end, mom admits that she does not know how far off track she’d gotten and all of the fun she’d forgotten. She’s up and ready to do anything in his heart. She wants to know how he got to be so smart.
