Book excerpt: This Status Assessment of the Niagara River Area of Concern (AOC) was conducted between May 2000 & April 2002 and included consultation between representatives of the Commission and citizens, government agencies, local industries & interest groups, and the Tuscarora Nation. The status assessment process included an examination of funding, institutional structure, roles of those involved, and public consultation. This evaluation also examines those activities occurring outside of the Remedial Action Plan (RAP) structure that foster restoration and protection of beneficial uses within the AOC. The assessment report begins with background on the AOC, including a history of water quality concerns in the River since 1912, sources of contamination, remedial measures undertaken, land use, and human health impacts of hazardous waste sites. The report then presents assessment findings, with examples to document & promote successful activities and help meet any remaining challenges. Recommendations to address those challenges are made with regard to RAP funding, co-ordination of efforts, public awareness & involvement, and appropriate technology.
