Book excerpt: ABSTRACT:The present study was designed to examine the perceptions of athletic training and advising practices during career guidance with students interested in athletic health care. The researcher used qualitative methodology collecting data through surveys with school counselors and athletic training students, as well as interviews with school counselors. Interview transcripts and survey responses were analyzed inductively using open and axial coding to establish categories and relationships; and the constant comparative method was used to analyze data. Interview groups were formed using a typological approach to form groups of school counselors with highly and less accurate perceptions of athletic training. School counselors accurately described attributes of the successful athletic training student and certified athletic trainer as well as accurate roles and responsibilities of the certified athletic trainer. Athletic training students felt negatively about the career advising process experience with school counselors. School counselors used a variety of sequential strategies used in career guidance forming a divergent discovery model for the guidance to careers and post-secondary school opportunities.
