Book excerpt: Governor Kean speaks at the New Jersey State Agriculture Convention, as part of New Jersey's Farmers' Week. He mentions that the state farmers produced $500 million worth of produce in 1984. He quotes Daniel Webster when he says "Farmers are the founders of human civilization." Members of the State Board of Agriculture are elected by delegates from the agriculture community to the legislatively-established, annual State Agricultural Convention in January then recommended to the Governor for appointment to the Board with the approval of the State Senate. Farmer-members of the State Fish and Game Council are also selected at the convention. Two special kinds of awards are also presented each year at the convention: Distinguished nguished Service and Outstanding Young Farmer. The New Jersey Department of Agriculture (NJDA), an agency which oversees programs that serve virtually all New Jersey citizens, was established in 1916. One of the Department's major priorities is to promote, protect and serve the Garden State's diverse agriculture and agribusiness industries. The Dept offers programs to support production agriculture, NJDA also manages programs that: feed schoolchildren, distribute surplus federal foods to soup kitchens and pantries that serve our needy citizens, conserve precious soil and water resources, protect farmland from development and preserve it for future agricultural use, expand export markets for fresh and processed agricultural products, and promote our commercial fishing industry, and, administer the complete program of agriculture, food and natural resource education, which includes the State FFA Association.
