Included are coaching ideas and Running anecdotes, some humorous. He trained hard and did his best. He finished five marathons and describes personal memories of training and strategy used in three. He later coached runners at club and elite levels. In addition there is advice on coaching running for sports other than Athletics. A tale is told of a typical middle-aged runner with a demanding job, who is made redundant, but secures another job, while training for and competing in a marathon. At the same time lifes mainstream activities needed resolution. With a young family, there is never enough time or money. The mortgage must be paid, appliances break down, household chores must be done and disaster is often fairly close. One cure for adversity is humour. Another is to go out for a run.
