Book excerpt: Paying particular attention to older workers, this Australian report examines the relationship between the skills of workers and the skill requirements of the jobs in which they work. The findings show that workers (in all age groups) with higher literacy and numeracy skills tend to use these skills more often than those with lower skill levels. Additionally, older workers used their skills in the workplace at least as much as younger workers, suggesting that they are not moving into less demanding jobs. Literacy and numeracy are the key focus of this report. Table of contents: * Executive summary * Introduction (Description of the data. Survey of Aspects of Literacy 1996. Adult Literacy and Life Skills Survey 2006. Measures of job tasks and individual literacy) * Literacy use at work (Document and prose literacy. Educational attainment and occupation.
