Book excerpt: The inspiration for the urban fantasy series, Starchild’s Fire, we can find many of the characters featured in these works exploring this town and universe in the novels. Welcome again to volume three and the town in literally the middle of nowhere. Val’s hometown remains the same place that they came to so many years ago, quiet and ordinary. They may have seen the events of the second world war and remember what your grandparents’ talked about, but they got a spring in their step as if they were at the end of the Cold War. They haven’t changed in that long and neither has much of the township. And if you wear a smile when brought here by an entity, there is no need to worry about being consumed by the normal monsters that often eat mortals; like all the cartographers who tried to map the (not at all) strange land. While nothing exciting happens around here, there’s always some kind of surprise found hiding behind the walls and in the pages of books. Whether it is discovering the vet’s office has a basement meant for the monstrous patients, or by meeting up with a creature from another plane summoned while clipping coupons. Or maybe it’s by getting over a bad night with a massage and afternoon on the town with guests that drop by every few decades. No matter what the case is, they fight boredom with a smile and a new way to view the world. Or at least find a bright side to look at when all is said and done. They see no reason to leave since, after all, all towns are like this.
