Book excerpt: In recent years, conversations and research studies into academic tracking have focused on the processes which high schools use to enroll students into various levels of courses. One of the most utilized processes is the act of having teachers recommend students for a particular level. The purpose of this mixed-method research study is to understand teacher, guidance counselor, and principal perceptions about the process of course recommendations, academic tracking, and the effects on students. A total of ninety-two teachers, guidance counselors, and principals from high schools in the Philadelphia, Pa. suburbs participated in this study. Two major findings were derived from this study: (1) High schools need to develop criteria and procedures for making course recommendations on a macro-level scale by consulting all staff; (2) The course recommendation procedures and course expectations need to be transparent to all staff, students, and parents, while also having explicit criteria for making recommendations and for enrolling in the different course tracks. This study concludes with recommendations for further research into course recommendations and academic tracking.
