Book excerpt: Two techniques have been developed for an essentially simultaneous sampling of the atmosphere by radar and airborne instrumentation. The first technique allows a detailed time and space comparison of the returned radar signal and the measured meteorological parameters. The second provides a display of the atmospheric structures being sampled by the aircraft at the exact time the aircraft is taking the samples. Operational procedures and considerations are also discussed along with examples of their use in the study of the convective process in clear air and their potential usefulness in the study of other atmospheric processes such as rain. The two techniques represent powerful tools in any investigation where simultaneous remote and in situ measurements are to be related. They are particularly applicable where the statistical properties of the atmospheric process are to be compared since it is only necessary to assume that the process is stationary for a few seconds.
