Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to understand the impact of acculturation, socioeconomic status, depression, and insurance coverage on the delays in receiving mental health services among Asian Americans sixty years old and older. The data for the study was collected from 913 elderly Asian Americans who had responded to the California Health Interview Survey (CHIS), in 2005. The independent variables were acculturation, socioeconomic status, depression, and insurance coverage for mental health services. The dependent variable was the delays on receiving mental health services. The results of the regression analysis determined that acculturation, socioeconomic status, and depression did not delay Asian Americans from utilizing mental health services. Although, there was a significant relationship between having insurance coverage and delays in receiving mental health services, Asian Americans who had insurance, also had access to seeking and receiving mental health treatment. To get a more comprehensive understanding of mental health issues in the Asian American community, more research would have to examine the impact of stigma and the cultural norms that prevent Asian Americans from seeking treatment.
