Book excerpt: Abstract: The purpose of this content analysis is to gain a better understanding of the protective factors that have been cited as fostering resilience among African American urban adolescent female students exposed to trauma. This study provides a content analysis by critiquing the resiliency and trauma researchers' discourse on African American urban female adolescents. The analysis included examining the following variables the operationalization of resiliency factors, protective processes, risk factors, types of trauma, psychopathology, and psychosocial recommendations. The content analysis revealed that trauma and resiliency researchers are minimally exploring how African American urban female adolescents are neutralizing trauma risk with protective factors appropriate for their environment or systems. Trauma exposure in poverty-stricken urban neighborhoods yields high risk factors that make these adolescents vulnerable to experiencing trauma symptoms and further PTSD if trauma is not assessed and treated. The review provides information on areas where further research is necessary.
