Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twenty-Third Annual Report of the School Committee of the Town of Swampscott, for the Year Ending February 28, 1875 During the past year the Committee have endeav ored by frequent visitation to cultivate a familiar acquaintance with the schools, to encourage and assist the teachers and stimulate the scholars. This ac quaintance enables us to report the schools in a decidedly hopeful and encouraging condition, though not yet what they should be. I An unusual number of changes in our corps of teachers, and the prevalence of scarlet fever and whooping cough, considerably interrupted the work in some of the schools, but these hindrances have been bravely met, and in a good degree overcome. The teachers have generally dis played a commendable devotion to their work, and some of them have succeeded admirably in imparting their own zeal to their pupils.
