Book excerpt: '60 CROSSWORD PUZZLES WITH SOLUTIONS' contains a collection of sixty crossword puzzles (with solutions) originally published by the author in The Jakarta Post newspaper of Indonesia. Many of the readers had an interest in improving their English skills and this was taken into account during compilation of the puzzles. This is not to say that the puzzles are particularly simple but they do occasionally contain short solution words so as to provide starting points for more difficult ones. Some of these short words recur from puzzle to puzzle and, to improve variety, abbreviations, chemical symbols, etc have sometimes been used as well. In most cases, British English is used. American spelling has occasionally been used for the sake of expediency. Use of Latin and foreign words has been restricted to those normally found in an English dictionary. The puzzles are of two types: a fairly straight forward type, and a cryptic type in which the clues, though logical, are deliberately obscure. The ratio of "straight" to "cryptic" is two to one throughout the book.
